Running an SME on Excel is like driving on the motorway in first gear. It works, but the engine overheats. Here are the warning signs of disaster.
It's the classic story. You start with a "Clients.xlsx" file. Then a "Invoices" tab. Then a "Project Tracking" tab.
Three years later, the file is 45 MB, takes 2 minutes to open, and contains VBA macros only Michel (retired in 2023) understood.
The Leaning Tower Syndrome
Excel is a fantastic tool for calculation. It's a terrible tool for relational data management. Why? Because there is no:
- Strict data validation (you can write "twelve" in a price column)
- Concurrent access handling (who has the latest version?)
- Security and auditability (who deleted row 42?)
